I’m Shellee Cruz and I write romances.
Several years ago, my husband (the extrovert) begged me (the introvert) to take up a hobby, so that I would get out of the house and he wouldn’t feel guilty for always hanging out with the guys. I decided I would take up writing historical romances. (I think he meant tennis or something else outdoorsy and athletic, but whatever…)
So, I plotted and GMC’d and wrote for a year on my 19th century set sure-to-be bestseller. Until a particularly wonderful vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon at a friend’s wedding resulted in our having a baby nine months later. And the writing stopped.
Then after a 3 year period where I wrote a cumulative total of about 20 pages, the voices in my head started talking again (and if you’re a writer, you know what I mean). But this time the story they told me wasn’t 19th century angst and sexual repression. No, these voices were sassy, wickedly funny, and decidedly new millenium. Thus began my foray into young women’s comedic fiction, or, chick lit minus the vapid characterizations and shopping addictions I like to say.
So, now I write Chick Lit and dabble in historical, or vice versa, depending on my mood.
When I’m not dictating the voices in my head, I work and play (mostly play) in Austin, sharing an ordinary house on an ordinary street with my extraordinary husband, our precocious little girl and two under-exercised Australian shepherds, Zeus & Juno.
